Hand & Microsurgery

Dr. Tomas J. Saun is a Canadian Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with a focused practice in hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, microsurgery, and upper-extremity reconstruction.

He completed his medical training and Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Toronto, followed by advanced fellowship training in Hand and Microsurgery at The Buncke Clinic in San Francisco, California. Founded by Dr. Harry Buncke, widely regarded as the “Father of Microsurgery,” The Buncke Clinic has been a pioneering centre in microsurgery and reconstructive surgery for more than 50 years. The clinic played a foundational role in the development of modern microsurgical techniques and remains a leading referral centre for complex hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, limb reconstruction, replantation, and microsurgical reconstruction.

Dr. Saun currently practices throughout York and Durham Regions and is affiliated with Southlake Regional Health Centre and Lakeridge Health. His practice focuses on conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and upper extremity, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, peripheral nerve disorders, tendon injuries, fractures, arthritis, Dupuytren’s disease, and complex reconstructive problems.

His approach to patient care emphasizes education, clear communication, and evidence-based decision making. He believes patients should understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes so they can make informed decisions about their care.

Whether treating a straightforward hand condition or a complex reconstructive problem, his goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care with a focus on restoring function, relieving symptoms, and helping patients return to the activities that matter most to them.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy plays an important role in recovery from many hand injuries and surgical procedures. Specialized hand therapists work closely with patients to restore motion, strength, function, and confidence while protecting healing tissues.

Depending on the condition, therapy may be recommended before surgery, after surgery, or instead of surgery. Dr. Saun works closely with hand therapists across York and Durham Regions and, in selected circumstances, therapy services may also be available through the office.
